Mudejar, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque
THE ARTISTIC PERIODS THAT LEFT THEIR MARK ON BAENA
The long history of the city is manifested in the multiple artistic expressions that over time have enriched its most emblematic monuments. Valuable samples of painting, sculpture, goldsmithing, metalwork and white carpentry make Baena a benchmark for Art in Andalusia.
Many temples in the town can be considered true museums
The tour of the main monuments of Baen artistic manifestations of a sublime nature. This is how the four Gothic tables (three of them large) that are located in the Sagrario chapel of the parish church of San Bartolomé or the stone sculpture of the Virgen de la Antigua that presides over the presbytery of Santa María la Mayor could be considered . Precisely in this same church are some of the most interesting plateresque samples in the town, such as the previously named church of San Bartolomé and, above all, in that of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, highly relevant Mudejar coffered ceilings are preserved
. The Renaissance is widely represented in the church and choir of the Madre de Dios Monastery , while the Church of San Francisco , declared a Monument of National Historic-Artistic Interest, is the greatest exponent of the Baroque in the city. Its splendid main altarpiece, those of its different chapels and the mural paintings inside the temple itself demonstrate this. However, the parish church of San Bartolomé and that of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupehave interesting examples, the main altarpiece of the latter being one of the most outstanding in the province.
